With 326 PS, 545 Nm of torque, rear-wheel drive, and a projected range of up to 601 km, the new Volkswagen ID.3 GTI combines high-performance driving with everyday practicality.

As the most powerful production GTI announced by Volkswagen to date, the ID.3 GTI represents a major step in the evolution of the iconic performance badge. It is also the first rear-wheel-drive GTI, introducing a new driving experience while retaining the compact dimensions and usability that have defined the GTI family.

Developed on the basis of the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, the new electric hot hatch is expected to enter the market in early 2027, with pre-sales scheduled to begin at the start of the year.

Volkswagen ID.3 GTI Design: Classic GTI Styling Meets Electric Performance

The exterior of the Volkswagen ID.3 GTI combines traditional GTI design cues with modern details created specifically for an electric performance car.

At the front, the vehicle features IQ.LIGHT matrix LED headlights connected by a continuous illuminated light strip. An illuminated Volkswagen badge is integrated into the front lighting design, while the iconic red GTI accent line adds a clear connection to the original Golf GTI.

The red horizontal stripe is inspired by the red grille surround that became a signature feature of the first-generation Golf GTI. On the ID.3 GTI, this historic design element is combined with a more contemporary front-end layout.

Vertically positioned LED elements on both sides of the front bumper provide a distinctive lighting signature. Below the bumper, a high-gloss black honeycomb grille and a sporty lower splitter reinforce the car’s performance-oriented appearance.

Red accents on the outer edges of the bumper add further visual contrast, helping the electric ID.3 GTI stand apart from standard ID.3 models.

20-Inch Wörthersee Wheels and Signature GTI Colors

The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI comes with exclusive 20-inch Wörthersee alloy wheels. Their name pays tribute to the famous GTI gathering at Lake Wörthersee in Austria, an important part of the international GTI enthusiast community.

High-gloss black mirror caps and side skirts enhance the sporty character of the compact electric hatchback. Compared with the previous ID.3 GTX, the new ID.3 GTI features a more cohesive exterior color scheme.

The roof, rear spoiler, and tailgate are finished in body color rather than using the contrasting black treatment found on the previous GTX model. This design approach gives the car a visually longer roofline and a more unified silhouette.

One of the highlights of the new model is the return of the classic Tornado Red paint finish. This iconic GTI color reflects Volkswagen’s long-standing performance-car heritage and gives the ID.3 GTI an instantly recognizable appearance.

Volkswagen ID.3 GTI Interior: Sporty Details and Modern Technology

Inside, the Volkswagen ID.3 GTI features an exclusive black-and-red cabin with a range of performance-inspired details.

A slim red accent strip runs across the dashboard, while the sports steering wheel features a red 12 o’clock marker. These details echo the visual identity of previous GTI models.

The premium sports seats and rear seats feature a Superclark tartan pattern inspired by the checkered upholstery associated with the original Golf GTI. The design combines a classic GTI reference with the modern interior architecture of the ID.3 Neo.

An illuminated physical GTI button is positioned at the six o’clock location on the steering wheel. This dedicated control allows the driver to activate GTI mode directly.

The cockpit also includes a large digital instrument display and a 12.9-inch Innovision infotainment screen. The two displays are positioned along a similar visual axis to create a more cohesive and driver-focused dashboard layout.

Volkswagen has also added physical controls for selected functions, including climate control and audio adjustment. These features make everyday operation more convenient and reduce the need to navigate touchscreen menus while driving.

GTI Mode and DCC Sports Chassis

The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI introduces a dedicated GTI driving mode designed to enhance the car’s dynamic character.

In addition to the regular Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual driving profiles, GTI mode adjusts the vehicle’s powertrain response, progressive steering, and electronically controlled DCC sports chassis to their performance-focused settings.

Launch Control is also included as part of the GTI performance package.

When GTI mode is activated, the cabin ambient lighting switches to red, while the ID. Light system provides additional visual feedback. The digital instrument display changes to a dedicated GTI interface featuring a power meter and speedometer.

The vehicle can also produce simulated engine sounds to create a more immersive performance atmosphere, giving the electric hot hatch an additional connection to the emotional character of traditional GTI models.

Volkswagen ID.3 GTI Performance and Specifications

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTI is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 240 kW, equivalent to 326 PS, and a maximum torque of 545 Nm.

The rear-wheel-drive layout marks a significant change in GTI history. Previous production GTI models powered by combustion engines used front-wheel drive, while the ID.3 GTI introduces a rear-driven configuration designed to deliver a different balance of traction and handling.

Electric motors can deliver substantial torque from a standstill, giving the ID.3 GTI immediate acceleration and responsive power delivery.

The key performance figures announced by Volkswagen include:

Specification Volkswagen ID.3 GTI
Power output 240 kW / 326 PS
Maximum torque 545 Nm
Drivetrain Rear-wheel drive
0–100 km/h 5.6 seconds
Top speed 200 km/h, electronically limited
Battery capacity 79 kWh net
Maximum DC charging power 183 kW
Projected WLTP range Up to 601 km
Platform MEB+

The 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 5.6 seconds is achieved with the help of Launch Control. Although the acceleration figure is impressive, the electric motor’s instantly available torque is an important part of the car’s distinctive driving character.

Rear-Wheel Drive Changes the GTI Driving Experience

The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI is the first rear-wheel-drive model in the history of the GTI nameplate.

Its rear-mounted electric motor, low center of gravity, and electronically controlled DCC sports chassis create a different approach to performance compared with traditional front-wheel-drive GTI models.

Volkswagen has tuned the chassis to work with the high output of the electric powertrain, with the aim of delivering precise handling and confident acceleration.

The ID.3 GTI follows the earlier ID. Polo GTI, which introduced the GTI badge to Volkswagen’s electric vehicle range. While the ID. Polo GTI uses front-wheel drive, the ID.3 GTI adopts rear-wheel drive as part of its performance-focused engineering concept.

The new model can also be viewed as the successor to the ID.3 GTX in Volkswagen’s electric performance lineup. It features a dedicated GTI design package, a GTI-specific interior, and a chassis setup designed around the character of the iconic GTI brand.
